Have a plan. Have a back-up plan.
Have a budget and stay within it.
Express yourself – let your personal style be apparent. Be brave, creative and unique.
Details, details, details. Little details can go a long way in impressing your guests, and making life easier for you. This means anticipating the details and taking care of them.
Start Artfully - Set the theme for the party from the start – with a thoughtful invitation. Whether printed, hand-made, emailed….set the tone for your event with the invitation and have it express the theme or mood of the event or party.
Engage People - A sign of a remarkable host or hostess is someone who can gather a varied, yet compatible group of people together. Make people feel comfortable by introducing them, and starting out the conversation for them if they are strangers. “Ryan, I’d like you to meet Jacob. You both recently vacationed in Hawaii, I learned” Make people feel welcome.
Light and Sound - Have some appropriate and fun background music (or foreground music if there’s dancing of course!). And try creative things with lighting for mood – candles, lamps, firelight.
Simplification - Think about a timeline for your event. Think about logistics. What is the best experience you can provide your guests with the least labor for you so you can enjoy the party too?
Stay Safe - If you choose to serve alcohol, be sure all your guests are sober before you let them walk out the door. Don't be afraid to cut off the flow of wine or beer at some point, if it's the best way to ensure everyone's safety. Don’t compromise anyone's safety.
Relax and have fun! What good is entertaining if you’re not entertained?
